Caminito del Rey

Alquiler vacacional en la Costa del Sol, apartamentos cerca de la playa

One of the most spectacular landscapes in the Malaga mountains is the Gaitanes Gorge, a canyon with vertical walls excavated by the Guadalhorce River, which in some points is only 10 meters wide and reaches 700 meters deep. The enclave runs through the municipalities of Ardales, Antequera and Álora. The construction of a water channel from the northern reservoirs to El Chorro, to take advantage of the unevenness in a hydroelectric plant, entailed a maintenance road known precisely as Caminito del Rey because the work was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII. This path, about 3 kilometers long, was restored at the end of March 2015 and is already a prominent tourist attraction. With some glass-floored viewing platforms, not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo, the trail begins from its northern entrance, where you can see the King’s Chair. Among the fauna, mountain birds such as the Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture, golden eagle and honey buzzard falcon, among other species, stand out. The ibex inhabits the highest parts, along with foxes, rabbits, dormice, badgers and genets.
